Outward bleeding in the nostrils is usually disturbing. Most of them occur due to simple problems.
Despite rare cases, they can be the precursor of a serious disorder underlying.
As an organ, the nose and especially the partition (called the septum) that divides the nose into two, has a dense vascularisation. These blood vessels under a thin mucosa spread along the entire surface like a spider web.
We can group the causes of bleeding as those caused by the nose itself and external causes as follows;
The Disorders such as Septum Deviation (nasal cartilage curvature) and allergic rhinitis, which make the vessels sensitive and facilitate bleeding,
Habits of cleaning the nose such as nose-picking, scratching, severe blowing.
Exposure to hot and dry air,
Diseases such as cold, flu, rhinitis, sinusitis, nasal polyps.
Nasal sprays used for longer than necessary and at high doses,
Traumas to the nose,
Especially -in children and unilateral bleeding- foreign bodies in the nose,
Presence of chemical irritants in breathing air,
Stimulants and drugs used through the nose,
Nose and sinus tumours, especially in the elderly and unilateral recurrent bleeding,
In the process following nasal surgery.
Apart from the reasons arising from the nose itself, which we have listed above, it is important to investigate the general causes that we call systemic. These can also be listed as follows;
Uncontrolled high blood pressure,
Diseases of the blood and coagulation system such as hemophilia, thrombocytopenia, leukemia,
Diseases of organs such as kidney and liver that will adversely affect coagulation function when their functions are impaired,
Use of anticoagulants such as aspirin and heparin,
Excessive use of alcohol
Things to do in case of nosebleed;
First of all, not to panic (panic and anxiety will increase bleeding),
Keeping the head straight and slightly tilting forward (it will prevent blood from filling our throat from the rear nostrils),
If there is a large clot inside the nose, gently blowing it out,
Pressing the thumb and index fingers of the hand inward for ten to fifteen minutes without squeezing both nose wings too much, but to reduce bleeding, meanwhile breathing calmly through the mouth,

Compressing the nose and neck area with ice packs or towels soaked in cold water.
In the intervention made by the healthcare team for nosebleeds;
First of all, the bleeding is stopped,
However, in the meantime, various blood tests are requested for the detection of possible systemic causes if necessary, for the treatment, blood pressure control is performed,
If it can be determined that the bleeding focus is from a single point and it is easily accessible, burning with chemical or electrocautery can be applied,
Despite this, nasal pads can be placed in the bleeding that does not stop. For this purpose, special ready-made tampons as well as softened gauze can be used.
In cases of excessive bleeding that are difficult to control, tampons called posterior packing and tampons covering the nasal area behind the nose may be preferred.
General measures for bleeding;
Especially in young children, not leaving the nails long,
Using moisturizing creams and sprays in dry weather,
Avoiding long-term use of medicines and nasal sprays without the doctor’s recommendations.
